Protectors of the village : Barong and Rangda

A ceremony at the Temple of the Dead in Cengkok village

All the village members were present to attend the dance performance-ritual of the playful lion-like Barong and the menacing witch Rangda. Both represent the village protectors. They are actually two sides of a coin. The confrontation of Barong and Rangda in this ritual helps re-establish balance. The Cengkok village upheld this ceremony to welcome the new masks which have already been purified, sanctified and loaded with power (sakti). The old ones were stolen in the Temple of the Dead twenty years ago.
