The whole trip to this valley is enchanting.
In the villages around Sidemen, you will find home workshops for weaving; it is here that the complex “endek” fabrics and above all the sumptuous “songket” silk with gold threads are elaborated. Before bargaining for fabrics, remember that these fabrics involve up to 3 months work and that the material may be very expensive.
The road necessarily passes by Klungkung capital of a kingdom totally destroyed by the Dutch invader, at the beginning of the 20th century. A splendid Pavilion of Justice surrounded by water is all that survives of the magnificent palace. The pavillion’s inside roof is painted with frescos illustrating the suffering inflicted on those condemned for adultery, fornication and corruption.
